I've been looking for a large format all in one scanner for quite a while now. It is so disappointing to have so many large all-in-one printers that still have a tiny scan plate.
this one has a monster 11x17 inch scan surface!
i already was in line to buy at office depot when i saw that it also has wifi! then when i got home i noticed it has memory card readers and color lcd display. it just keeps getting better!
tried out the scanner, quality is great...and FAST! i'm glad this is a Brother too, i've never been impressed with any HP product, and they seem to dominate the industry now :(
so far, i couldn't be happier...and i assume with a 2 year warranty that i should stay happy :-) the only thing i could possibly think of to take it to the next level would be a laser version |

I use AutoCAD at work and occasionally at home. My hubby and I jumped when we saw this printer: just had to get it! The print is as good as on the 11x17 HP inkjet at work, and this 11x17 scanner is a better size than any of the workplace ones (although I haven't used that function yet).
Hubby managed to hook up the 6490 to our home wifi without help, and no, he didn't set our wifi up originally, and no, he doesn't really understand how wifi works. In fact, hubby is visually handicapped! I'd rate ease of installation to wifi as 5 stars. The only glitch we had was that we didn't know we had a firewall, but the install disc talked us though that step too.
So now I'm sitting in bed typing on my Dell 1520 XP and sending to the printer in the other room. I don't know how it goes through ink, but will post back if I have an issue about that or anything else in the future.
Edit added 9-6-08: We just changed the first ink cartridge. I've been printing mainly with black, but also did about 300 very small (2"x3") photos with lots of sky. We managed 700 copies on the first black cartridge as far as I can tell. Cyan is at 50% and magenta and yellow don't really show as being low yet. The machine has been beeping for the last week warning us black was low, but only today did it quit printing due to lack of ink. The last page it did was as good as the first, so I have to wonder exactly how low that ink was when it quit on us. At any rate: we had no wasted prints from low ink and it was nice enough to tell us it had stopped. Can't say that with the HP at work! |
Best printer I've owned so far!

The good:
* This printer is one of the best I've owned so far!
* It prints quickly, and the colors are good.
* Setup was easy and fast; my three Macs and one Dell PC all print to (and scan from) it wirelessly.
* I can select any of my computers -- including my Macs -- from the printer LCD and scan to it.
* I can "print" any document as a fax to a phone number, and that works well.
* The 11x17 paper size is GREAT for the kinds of documents I print.
* I can see supply levels from my Macs...wirelessly.
* I can't stress enough how impressed I am with the wireless support for this printer in the Mac drivers. I've tried a variety of Airport Express units and dedicated WiFi printer hubs with other printers (HP, Epson, and Canon) in the past, and they either didn't work, or only had partial functionality. This is the first one that does everything on both the Mac and Windows XP without compromise.
The bad:
* It doesn't print double-sided without having to manually flip the paper over; I thought I read somewhere it would, but it doesn't. One of the benefits of 11x17 paper is to print 4-panel "booklets" and this manual step slows that down.
* The Auto Document Feeder only seems to work when faxing; I haven't been able to figure out how to use it for scanning. Perhaps it doesn't, or I just don't know how to make it work...
The unknown:
* I've read about how quickly the ink runs out on this printer, but I haven't experienced that yet. I'll let you know if this is a problem after I've had the printer long enough to find out.
All in all, I'm VERY happy with this printer purchase. |

If you don't have time to read all of this...take it from an impartial old hand at desktop publishing printing / scanning -- BUY THIS MACHINE NOW! This my first Brother. I was very skeptical. Now I see It's worth at least 10 times the price. I usually keep my cool on finds like this. But I really want to see Brother crack the market here. HP/Canon/Epson is a letdown most of the time. I've had every brand of MFC, Scanner and Copier. And going back to the early 90s starting with Canon laser copier / printers the size of half a car. I've seen it all. After years of only partial satisfaction with HP and EPSON machines, Brother has made me a believer in the future of cheap consumer stuff and more so in the Brother brand. For $250 (street price as of 5/09), I simply have never seen a machine to date that can DO SO MUCH and competently to boot. As a professional publisher and archiver -- I don't usually consider inkjets at all.. ever. But Brother's inks are cheap. And, what will really blow your mind how cheap aftermarket refills and continuous ink feed systems are available. That means endless , self feeding ink. That could theoretically drop this machine to the cost per page of a laser!
Now, normally I would never touch scanners without rated optical density (ie DMAX). But , heck this scanner looks great! An I don't need to fuss with settings like I do with a 5 year old $2000 UMAX (yes it's better looking I admit).
Lots of reviews on the internet totally miss the point of this machine. It SCANS large stuff, like big books and brochures. The ADF can even feed big stuff - they thought of everything!!
Overall: Much better software drivers than HP or Epson usually supply. Works great with MAC OSX. Something you cannot count on from HP. Brother has taken a quantum leap here. They included a set of real manuals. The ink carts are much more generous than I even seen to date in any inkjet. I believe they are breaking out of the Gillette business model (sell cheap printer so you by the high $ ink).
Printer:
1) Rips big graphics faster than my HP CM1017 laser and rasterizes (renders) the output beautifully.
2) Prints POSTER size stuff.
3) Prints over WiFi
4) Good / easy printer setup.
5) 2 huge paper trays. Man, you like will never run out of paper.
Scanner:
1) Looks good. Scans fast even high res 600dpi.
2) Scans big stuff 11x17. This is rare capability boys & girls! Big $$ normally.
3) YOU NEED NO COMPUTER, archive directly to PDF -- Grandma hates the PC? Just make your settings, tell her to press Scan, OK next page. Scan 100 or 1000 pages to a JUMP DRIVE or mem card! Store indefinitely.
4) Scans straight to the internet FTP address (last time I checked Xerox wanted big $ for this)
5) Scans over WiFi -- a cherry on top.
6) Scan a big book 2 UP and reduce to one page or do a 4 in one, save paper and finish big jobs quick.
It has an ADF for easy scan jobs. Saves time.
Oh, and all of the complaints about size? C'mon folks. It perches easily on the corner of a table. I have compared it's size to that of HP/Canon with nowhere near the capabilities. And it is really hardly any larger footprint wise. If you want a cheap and capable rig, make the room.
The BAD you ask? Any complaint you could make here would fly with the OTHER BRANDS TOO. So for $250 no complaints. It's consumer grade. Inkjets are not as good as lasers. But I am asking myself if it's time to compromise.
Yes it has BUGS, foibles etcs. All gear does. But it's reliable. So if you need any of the above features -- it's a NO BRAINER. You're getting so much here, it's crazy.
Don't forget to use a MAC with native PDF support. It's a great combo.
So, Amazons' price is good. What are you waiting for? |

| I had a 3-year-old HP all-in-one that has been the shared household printer for 4 users. It finally went south on me and when i went to replace it i saw the MFC-6490CW at the local Staples ... actually my wife pointed it out to me. I have always needed a large format printer and a fax readily available which meant having two machines. This beauty eliminates the need for them. I took me less than two hours to set it up and get the drivers installed on an XP desktop, a Vista laptop, and XP laptop and a Linux laptop [Ubuntu 8.04] all using a WiFi connection. Brother really has their act together offering the Linux drivers, too. |
